Mayday Mayhem This is one of the most enjoyable Dr Who stories ever. Set in a quaintly picturesque English village, it involves witchcraft, demons, and killer Morris dancers. The highlight of the story is the wonderfully funny performance of Damaris Hayman as the eccentric yet down to earth ‘white witch’ Miss Hawthorn. There isn’t a dull moment in the entire story. A joy from beginning to end.
One of the best Third Doctor stories This one has all the best ingredients of the time – great location, cast and story. The setting is Aldbourne in Wiltshire – a beautiful village which I paid a few visits to when I was commuting from London to Gloucester each Monday morning several years back. I like all the actors who have played the Doctor but Jon Pertwee was one of ‘my Doctors’ as he was incumbent when I was about eight years old. He is assisted by the wonderful Katy Manning who played Jo Grant. The story also features the Doctor’s arch enemy the Master played by the superb Roger Delgado. Add to that the inclusion of the UNIT team and a great story and you have an absolute classic. I still watch it right through with no hint of boredom. The DVD, which will no doubt give us a clearer view of the whole thing as well, is apparently slated for release in 2012 which is great news – as one of the other reviewers says on here, let’s hope the documentary, Return to Devils End, is included with that release. If you cannot wait that long then I would recommend getting a copy of the VHS!
