Looks great, sounds great, but not entirely compatible with the old set On its own this new sonic screwdriver, be it a Series 7 spoiler or something cooked up purely by the minds at Character, is very neat. It comprises (in its own words) a mixture inspired by Elizabethan, Victorian, Present Day and Future London…What that means is that the emitter tip is shaped much like the original , but comes in blue as opposed to green and is shrouded in a mash-up between a tesla coil and a crown. The most beautifully detailed component, the switch, is a red and gold carving studded with blue (light up) gems and switches reminiscent of ostentatious door furniture , whilst the pommel is a miniaturised steam boiler. Given all of that, it’s a shame that the fourth and final component, presumably from future London is a completely boring white cylinder with a tiny star map detail Don’t be fooled by the image Amazon are using, which is from the prototype, with more light or something reminiscent of the Neural Relay in the . Why they didn’t at least stick with this (or put more thought into it) I don’t know.The box now more clearly boasts of “8 New Sound Effects” in addition to the standard noise for a total of nine and makes clearer how you trigger them (I’d criticised the for having 8 of its own sounds present with the secret 6 unannounced). The new effects are superb.I mentioned that “on its own” the screwdriver is “very neat.” One other detail the box broadcasts is its compatibility with the . I’d been looking forward to this feature most of all, as I love build-your-own kits, and while I’m no mathematician, I’d imagine that these four new components add a fair number of new combinations to the last set’s claim of 80+ (over 200 apparently). This is, unfortunately, not entirely the case. While the body, pommel and emitter will work just fine with the older components, a design flaw in the new switch (or, according to Character, a fault on my particular model, disproven by testing it with those of several friends) means that it pops old emitters straight out once the screwdriver is assembled, limiting the number of new combinations. While I like this new set very much, I bought it primarily as a new set of components for my existing personalise-your-own sets, and am disappointed that this has sneaked through the quality control stage.*EDIT*: Filing down the bubble top of the sound/light unit with a nail file/emery board/wet and dry paper or similar until it is flat solves the problem. Ultimately the red and gold collar has been designed slightly too short to accommodate the sound and light unit and the emitter, and as the bigger and sturdier piece, the emitter wins.I also wonder if a change of colour would have made this model even more unique and really stand out. I know I’ve said it before, but swapping out the now tried-and-tested green or blue LEDs for red or even another colour would mix things up even further. Purple or yellow would have gone nicely with this set.It’s still great, I still like it, but it could have done with a little more imagination in places and some better testing before claiming it works with the old set.
very good toy the new sounds effects are quite cool. only a couple of pieces will combine with a personalize your sonic screwdriver set. 9/10 product.
