One thought on “Complete Solo Piano Music, The (Hunt)”
MERELY MOERAN Moeran is not ultimately a composer of particularly strong profile or profundity and if his piano works are neither completely engaging nor memorable, they still retain a distinct naïve charm and attractive melodic grace. Unlike compatriots, John Ireland and Arnold Bax, Moeran reaches for the same heartfelt nostalgia, wistfulness, angst, but unfortunately merely skims the surface. There is, however, his penchant for a tangible pastoral lyricism that is quite disarming, and if the compositions sound a tad homogenous, it is a familiarity that breeds comfort, not contempt. Regardless of overall musical significance, it is a considerable bonus nonetheless to have all Moeran’s creative invention accessible on one disc. Pianist Una Hunt brings to this music warmth and obvious affection, nicely produced and recorded.[Running time: 77:04]
