“..GOOD BUT NOT GREAT..” This was much better than the 2010 Christmas special, a good hearted family Christmas tale with some elements of the lion the witch and the wardrobe thrown in, theres nothing major in the way of action and it lacked a good villain but I guess its for kids, it has nothing on the excellent sixth series, but overall it was funny and has the usual wit from Matt Smith to carry it along smoothly, its probably best to wait for the seventh series box set to get it though rather than pay extra for it. I think the highlight of the episode was seeing the lovely Karen Gillan at the end.
An Annual Treat SPOILERS! DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU!Only part of this I didn’t like was part of the start, the rest was fine but deep space diving into a planet’s atmosphere trying to don a spacesuit… well only Goldeneye beats it for ridiculousness and thats only because this is doctor who!Otherwise I loved the start and plan on rewatching it and just wonder how they could have got him back down to earth in a manner that at least avoided being exposed to the vacuum of space with nothing to protect him let alone putting a certain helmet on backwards…My best idea is that the entire cubicle where the spacesuit is along with the doctor is blown clear off the spaceship and he has to rush putting it on as the cubicle starts to break up and we see him surfing on a piece of the cubicle in his spacesuit and only realise he has put the helmet on backwards when it is shown in the movie, sorry for the spoiler but thats why I’m stressing this since it is the only part I really didn’t like and why it lost one star as s result because as a christmas doctor who it otherwise a fine addition and I plan on introducing this to my nephew next chance I get!BY THE WAY I DID SAY SPOILERS DIDN’T I?
I actually rather liked this and it reminded me of the stories produced in the comic versions of Doctor Who in the sixties. It is a very pleasant reminder. I could easily see the whole thing drawn by John Canning and in colour. Matt Smith, playing The Doctor, ably takes in the Troughtonesque but isn’t a copy. In the light of Troughtons shadow ? The ending is wonderfully played between Matt and a returning Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. If you buy it, don’t just leave it for Christmas. Annuals can be for any time of year.
