Grands cantiques du XXe siècle / Wells Cathedral Choir, dir. Malcolm Archer
One thought on “English Hymn, Vol.1”
The Art of Hymnody This is the first of several volumes and comprises hymn tunes written in the 20th Century. The CD contains many well-known hymn tunes,as well as those less familiar. A feature of this volume is the use of some stirring descants. The first two tracks on the CD are a good example of this (“Christ Triumphant, ever reigning” and “How shall I sing that Majesty”).My own favourite “King of Glory, King of Peace” is sung to a tune by the Director of Music, Malcolm Archer, who also composed the music for “Praise the Lord of Heaven”. If you want a volume containing some of the best 20th Century music, as well as a few less well-known tunes, then you are not likely to be disappointed with this volume. The performances and recording quality are very good. The CD has most informative sleeve notes by Alan Luff, which include complete texts of the hymns as well as background information on the hymns and tunes.I give this volume a firm recommendation. Enjoy!
