(TV: The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis). What’s Up Doc?There is some evil in all of us – even the Doctor, transported aboard the Time Lords’ orbiting courtroom, the Doctor once again encounters the Valeyard, an amalgamation of the darker sides of his nature. This time, however, the Doctor isn’t in the dock as this time, the Valeyard is the defendant, accused of a crime so terrible that the presiding Inquisitor is forbidden to reveal it even to the court, nor even to his counsel for the defence… the Doctor. If the Valeyard is found guilty, he’ll be executed, execute the Valeyard & the secret of his origins dies with him a secret that the Doctor is desperate to know… & which the Time Lords will stop at nothing to protect.Timelord Thoughts.’The Trial of the Valeyard’ is for the most part a intriguing entertaining enough engaging audio adventure that is aimed directly at hard-core classic Who fans as writers Alan Barnes & Mike Maddox script contains a superb enigmatic mystery of just who or what is The Valeyard? This story is crammed full of speculation to the true identity of this character & while Barnes & Maddox answer a few of these revelations they leave us with some new questions about the real identity of the Valeyard & how these revelations could possibly play out in future adventures, it’s such a pity this wasn’t dramatized as a 4 part main range story & allowed the listener to experience these events discussed here unfold instead of the just being in a court settings.Colin Baker, Michael Jayston & the late Lynda Bellingham are reunited in there roles as the Sixth Doctor, the Valeyard & the Prosecutor ( Darkel) which this time sees The Valeyard on trial & recreates some great moments of character drama that are impressively written & performed by the relatively small cast.Colin Baker gives a wonderful commanding performance here as the Sixth Doctor who curiosity gets the better of him again while the silky voiced tones of Michael Jayston slips effortlessly back into his role as The Valeyard who underplays the evil that somehow makes the character seem far more sinister & devious, while the late Lynda Bellingham gives a phenomenal performance as The Inquisitor who’s task it is in discovering the truth about the Valeyards intentions & see that justice is served. This story builds up the drama & pace brilliantly & the revelations are insightful that kept my interest until the storys final 10 minutes as the script seemed to fall apart a little & didn’t for me give a solid enough satisfactory conclusion which overall felt slightly underwhelming. The sound design & score my Andy Hardwick is atmospheric that recreates the Trial settings superbly while Barnaby Edwards direction is solid enough for the majority of the story despite the finales few shortcomings.Overall, ‘Trial of the Valeyard’ is aimed at the…
