Great idea almost realised When I saw the description for this item I thought “Wow, a sonic screwdriver that actually works!” Well now i’ve got one and am I still impressed? On the plus side the screwdriver looks the part and, thanks to its metal body, it feels the part too. The weight sets it apart from the toy versions and makes it feel more robust too. It is worth noting that it is only the bottom half that is metal. This part incorporates a magnetic bit holder, the 3xAG10 batteries (not 2xAA as in some listings) and a sound chip (which is activated by a button). The top half has the green light surrounded by non moving claws and contains the screwdiver bits when not in use.The bad points, in my opinion, are as follows. First I found that the screwdriver bits were pushed so far into their storage compartment that I needed a pair of long nosed pliers to get them out. If inserted any less the compartment wouldn’t close properly. Secondly the bit holder where you put the screwdriver bits to use them is about 1/2mm too small to take standard 1/4″ screwdriver bits. This means that when the supplied bits get rounded out, as would be normal in anything beyond occasional use, you’re not going to be able to replace them. Finally the bits themselves have an attractive green laquer coating that scratches off as soon as you use them.In conclusion I’d say that the sonic screwdriver looks and feels good, but its value as a working screwdriver is more novalty than practical.
Sonic Screwdriver A little disappointed when this arrived in the mail, it is good quality as it is made of metal, well the bottom half is, the top half is made of plastic, the sound doesn’t really sound like the sonic screw driver at all, and the light can barely be seen. As for the screw driver part, the heads are stored in the plastic part of the screw driver, and they are difficult to remove from the storage area, when you have finally managed to get the screw bit that you need, and place it into the end, it bulky to use, and it slips. Also the screw bits are coated in green paint, which scrapes off as soon as you start to use them.
